Shaggy Polypore – Inonotus hispidus

Always a neat find, the shaggy polypore (Inonotus hispidus) is one that I have found growing abundantly while mushroom hunting in southern Alabama. As a matter of fact, all the polypores of Alabama are a cool and interesting find. Other favorite polypores that I have found include the artists conk mushroom and the turkey tail mushroom. Continuing on, let’s explore more about this interesting and uniquely beautiful mushroom.

Inonotus hispidus is a reddish orange in color. As it matures, this beautiful polypore turns dark brown to blackish in color as can be seen in the following photos.

When young, it has a hairy upper surface. I’ve included below,  some close up photos to demonstrate the hairy effect on younger specimens.

Inonotus hispidus is found growing on oak trees and other living broad leafs. They are easy to find. So, next time your hunting for mushrooms, keep an eye out for this really cool polypore. Keep exploring!
